Shelley Hancock

Shelley Hancock has 20 years of experience as a classical ballet dancer and has been a Starting Strength coach for 10 years. Born and raised in Wichita Falls, Texas, she was introduced to her first barbell by Mark Rippetoe in 2007 and became a SSC in 2008. she has a BS in Athletic Training from Midwestern State University and after working as a Collegiate head Athletic Trainer, she returned to Wichita Falls to attain a MS in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Exercise Physiology under Dr. Lon Kilgore. She developed a special interest in researching human biomechanics and barbells during this time which led to the first peer reviewed published material on the SS start position in the Deadlift in the International Journal of Exercise Science. She is featured in various books, the Starting Strength DVD and posters illustrating anatomy related to exercise performance. In 2011, Shelley moved to New York City to work for a Center for Preventative Medicine as an exercise specialist and research coordinator. Here, she was able to continue her love of research and apply her knowledge of Starting Strength to an aging/ at risk population. She conducted numerous Starting Strength Training Camps and Olympic Weightlifting Camps in the New York area. As of 2013, Shelley and her husband SSC Josh Wells moved to the coast of North Carolina to run the Starting Strength program at Crystal Coast Strength and Conditioning.
